Toddlers and Toilets

I love a new week and a fresh start, but not so much today.

Last night our two year old decided to go potty by himself. Yay! Right? Well, the problem is he used the toilet upstairs and of course used an absurd amount of toilet paper while trying to wipe himself. I think we all know what happens next......

Yes, the toilet overflowed, which isn't usually a problem because the water level usually rises in the toilet and maybe a little bit of water pours over the edge. However, that particular toilet has issues with the flapper in the tank and the flapper got stuck in the raised position, so the water kept pouring into the tank, which poured into the toilet bowl and over the edge. I don't know how long it was pouring onto the bathroom floor, but we were alerted when we heard a waterfall coming from the ceiling vents in the downstairs front room of our house onto the wood floors.

I ran upstairs to see the source and cause of the water. As I sloshed through the soppy carpet of the boys' bedroom I was encountered by a half naked little boy who proudly announced to me that he pooped. I couldn't help but find humor in the situation because he was standing in a giant puddle of water as the toilet kept overflowing and he was absolutely clueless that this situation was not normal. He was just simply proud of the fact that he took the initiative to go potty by himself. It was definitely a "bless his heart" type of situation.

I gave him a quick, "Good job!" and then immediately turned off the water at the wall. We gathered every single bath towel in the house to clean up the mess both upstairs and downstairs. I ran to the garage to get my new Shop Vac that I bought on Black Friday. As much as I cringed at the current situation, I was secretly excited to try it out, and I will say it did an amazingly good job at sucking up the water from the carpet. It took me a couple hours, but by the end the carpet was an acceptable dampness.

So...my fresh start this week wasn't so fresh, because I was busy this morning finishing Shop Vac'ing the carpet, washing and folding towels, and putting furniture and bookshelves back into place in the affected downstairs room. Thankfully there wasn't too much damage to the floors downstairs. The ceilings are quite a mess. We now know where every seam in the ceiling drywall is, but it doesn't seem like it's anything that a little Kilz and paint can't fix. Needless to say, my children did a lot of "independent learning" today. They actually spent a good portion of time competing online in the spelling portion of the World Education Games. So that was fun for them. Tomorrow is the math portion of the competition.

I've been working on not letting these little worldly trials of mortality bother me like they used to. I just laughed when it happened, like I did exactly a year ago when I broke the pipe behind the downstairs toilet and flooded the downstairs of our house. I'm not sure which situation was worse. Last year there was definitely more water, but this year more damage because of the ceiling. Last year we had to shut the water off for 2 days because we had to fix the pipe, but this year we still had running water. Last year half of my kids had the stomach bug while our water was shut off, and this year we were healthy. Tough call. I say this year's flood was the better one. I can blame it on my two year old :)

I'm thinking water stains could be new interior design trend.
(This is just a portion of the ceiling. There's a few more seams you can't in this picture.)
